Adziwa's Story

In the 80s and 90s, Africa experienced a significant loss with the AIDS epidemic. Many families were losing adult children leaving elderly family members to care for young orphans. During this time, Capital City Baptist Church (CCBC) identified a vast need in the Village of Kauma.

Kauma is a squatter settlement in Lilongwe, the capital city of Malawi. Kauma has a population of 33,000, of which about 7,000 are orphans. During initial assistance, CCBC brought the first water kiosks into Kauma and supported food security for the needy.

A few years later, CCBC partnered with The Peoples Church of Tennessee, USA (now Church of the City – COTC) to create a long-term relationship with the community and to provide more sustainable resources.

Since the beginning of that partnership, they have been able to accomplish the following:

  • The construction of 23 houses for the neediest guardians keeping orphans (Adziwa Gardens)
  • The establishment and construction of an entire primary school and secondary school
  • Feeding program for more than 400 students every day
  • A Medical program (school nurse)

From this partnership, the Friends of Adziwa entity was born to be a long-term support resource for Adziwa.
